Visions in Vinyl
I have always been in love with music. My head is never quiet, so I don’t like for the world around me to be either. I am amazed by music’s ability to make you feel weak or powerful, happy or sad, nostalgic and full of longing for the past or excitement for the future. In this series, I explore the way that a particular song not only makes me feel, but what it makes me see. While painting, sometimes I danced; sometimes I cried; sometimes I was silent and pensive whereas other times I was singing along. I started with a watercolor layer, using the colors I saw and strokes I felt. I focused on the process rather than the finished product, something that is challenging for me. Next, I drew a layer of line designs in pen. Months later, I added a layer of acrylic which provided texture as well as insight. Revisiting the paintings, I was surprised to find that some of the songs had all new meanings to me, and as a result the finished product was far removed from where it started. Recently, I have added larger paintings, which are painted along to mood-based playlists rather than single songs. These paintings have added a new visual aspect to the series while serving as a cathartic method for me to be more present. As I listen and respond physically to the music, I have been able to better explore where I am mentally. In the end, all of this is translated visually onto the canvas.
